All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) chairperson TG Sitharam announced on Friday that the Council is working to integrate artificial intelligence (AI) into all branches of technical education. This move is part of AICTE's broader strategy to modernize and enhance the quality of technical education in India.
While AICTE had introduced a BTech programme in AI and Data Science as early as 2017, the Council is now taking a more comprehensive approach. Sitharam told PTI, “A committee of experts has been constituted to suggest necessary revisions in the model curriculums. This committee has already held three meetings. I expect the panel to submit its recommendations within the next month on how AI can be incorporated across all branches. Two months after that, we aim to finalise the updated model curriculums.”
Based on these new model curriculums, AI-inclusive teaching could begin as early as the next academic year. The initiative aims to equip students with the skills needed to thrive in a rapidly evolving technological landscape. Sitharam also highlighted that AICTE has made around 1,000 textbooks available online in 12 Indian languages, which have been downloaded seven lakh times over the past two years.
Currently, 54 technical institutions across the country are offering various courses in these 12 Indian languages. Sitharam was in Indore to attend a meeting of Parliament's advisory committee, chaired by Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan. The meeting focused on promoting education in Indian languages in schools and higher education institutions.
The integration of AI into technical education is expected to have a significant impact on the job market, preparing students for careers in data science, machine learning, and other high-demand fields. It also aligns with the government's vision of making India a global leader in technology and innovation.
AICTE's efforts to modernize curriculums and promote education in Indian languages reflect a commitment to making quality education accessible and relevant to a diverse student population. By integrating AI, the Council is not only enhancing the technical skills of students but also fostering a culture of innovation and continuous learning.
