MANILA, Philippines – Disinformation agents, known for spreading lies, half-truths, and propaganda, are ramping up their efforts ahead of the 2025 elections. The Commission on Elections (Comelec), equipped with its resources and the significant powers it has during election periods, is taking proactive measures to address these threats and risks.
To combat the misuse of artificial intelligence (AI) in campaigns, Comelec has established Task Force KKK (Katotohanan, Katapatan, at Katarungan). This task force will monitor social media and the internet for deepfakes, cheapfakes, and soft fakes related to election processes. It will also target the administrators of troll farms, fake accounts, and astroturf groups that create and post false, malicious, and misleading information using AI.
Task Force KKK aims to ensure the integrity of the electoral process by identifying and neutralizing these digital threats. The task force will work closely with social media platforms, tech companies, and other stakeholders to detect and remove harmful content.
However, this initiative comes with its own set of challenges. The rapid evolution of AI technology makes it difficult to keep up with the latest forms of disinformation. Additionally, the sheer volume of online content and the complexity of tracing its origin pose significant hurdles.
To discuss these challenges and the potential of Task Force KKK, Lawyer Lourdes Alcain, Chief of Staff to Commissioner Nelson Celis, will join Rappler managing editor Miriam Grace A. Go for a live conversation in the latest episode of Ask Your Comelec. Tune in on Friday, October 18, at 6 pm.
