Free AI Online Course Launched by Law Society for Dublin Residents

The Law Society invites Dublin residents to join a free, on-demand online course exploring artificial intelligence (AI) and its impact on daily life, business, and society. 

Dublin residents are invited to join the Law Society’s free course exploring artificial intelligence (AI). The on-demand course began online from last Tuesday (June 10).

How can AI make my life easier? Can I trust AI? What will AI look like in the future? These questions and more will be answered for Dublin residents during the five-week course.

The course will offer Dublin residents an opportunity to delve into the world of AI, to better understand its benefits and challenges, learn what AI can be used for now and in the future, and to become familiar with issues surrounding data security, ethical concerns, and economic consequences.

President of the Law Society, Eamon Harrington, said: “AI is a rapidly developing area and is already influencing many areas of our daily lives. Understanding the significant impact AI is having on individuals, businesses, the justice sector, and wider society, is the first step in effectively using it.”

“The Law Society is delighted to offer this year’s free online course on AI. Over 3,000 people from around the world have already registered to take part, so it is clear people have an interest in exploring this evolving topic.”

What will I learn?

“You don’t need to have prior knowledge about AI to get something from this course. Instead, it aims to remove the mystery and instil confidence in understanding the scope and power of AI tools. It will provide a foundational overview of AI and will also consider the impact AI may have within organisations, explore the considerable impact on society, examine AI regulation, and look at how AI can be applied in our daily lives.”

The Law Society course will be delivered through a series of online presentations from expert speakers on AI. The five-week free online course is run as one of the Law Society’s many Public Legal Education initiatives and aims to increase awareness of the law by teaching people about our legal system and how law impacts on society.

“The Law Society is proud to continue to offer accessible legal education for the public,” said Mr Harrington. “This AI course is open to anyone and everyone, anywhere in the world. From school children upwards, if you have an interest in learning about AI and its influence on wider society, you are invited to take part, and upskill, for free, this summer.”

Since the first Law Society Massive Open Online Course in 2014, over 34,000 people have registered from 119 countries. Each year, the five-week long online course focuses on a different topic as it relates to the law and is open to all, with notable past speakers including Mary Robinson and Leo Varadkar.

The course is presented in short videos and presentations, quizzes, and online activities with new course content released every Tuesday. The course is on-demand, making it easy for participants to catch up at any stage.
