The 34th International Joint Conference on Artificial Intelligence (IJCAI 2025) is set to take place in Montreal, Canada, from August 16 to August 22, 2025. The conference, themed 'AI at the service of society,' aims to highlight the latest advancements in artificial intelligence and their applications for societal benefit. Since its inception in 1969, IJCAI has been a leading platform for showcasing cutting-edge AI research and applications, making it the oldest continuously running conference in the field.
IJCAI 2025 is expected to attract over 2,000 attendees and is being organized by Gilles Pesant, the Local Arrangements Committee Chair. Pesant, a Professor in the Department of Computer and Software Engineering at Polytechnique Montréal and an IVADO researcher, emphasizes the unique opportunity the conference presents for the Canadian AI community. 'What makes IJCAI special is that it brings together the latest research from many different areas of artificial intelligence. It’s a great opportunity for the Canadian AI community to showcase world-class contributions and outstanding talent,' he says. Pesant is known for his work on advanced algorithms for complex scheduling and planning problems and his current research interests in neuro-symbolic AI systems.
Canada has a rich history of AI leadership, particularly during the 'AI winter' when much of the world abandoned neural networks. Visionaries like Geoffrey Hinton and Yoshua Bengio continued to advance deep learning, laying the foundation for the AI revolution. Today, Canada remains at the forefront of AI research through institutions such as MILA, the Vector Institute, AMII, IVADO, and the Canadian AI Safety Institute.
The IJCAI 2025 program features internationally recognized keynote speakers covering a wide spectrum of AI research. Yoshua Bengio, a pioneer in deep learning and recipient of the 2018 Turing Award, will discuss the latest advancements in AI. Bengio, a professor at the Université de Montréal and founder of Mila – Quebec AI Institute, has played a crucial role in establishing Montreal as a global hub for AI research.
Heng Ji, a professor at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign, will explore how AI systems extract and distill knowledge from vast amounts of unstructured data. Her work bridges the gap between human language and machine understanding, with significant real-world applications. Luc De Raedt, a professor at KU Leuven and director of Leuven.AI, will address the integration of machine learning with symbolic reasoning, emphasizing the importance of ethical and trustworthy AI.
Bernhard Schölkopf, director at the Max Planck Institute for Intelligent Systems and co-founder of ELLIS, will discuss the role of AI in scientific research and the development of causal digital twins. Schölkopf is a prominent advocate for ethical and trustworthy AI in Europe, shaping research agendas and policy discussions.
The conference also honors several awardees, including Aditya Grover (UCLA and Inception Labs), Rina Dechter (University of California, Irvine), and Cynthia Rudin (Duke University), for their outstanding contributions to AI research.
IJCAI 2025's scientific program highlights the diverse applications of AI, from creative arts to social good. The AI, Arts & Creativity track explores AI's role in music, design, and storytelling. The Human-Centred AI track addresses the challenges of aligning AI systems with human values. The AI for Social Good track focuses on AI-driven solutions for global challenges, aligning with the UN Sustainable Development Goals. The AI4Tech track showcases AI's impact on health, finance, mobility, and smart cities.
The conference includes a set of competitions and challenges to push the boundaries of applied AI, such as the Deepfake Detection and Localization Challenge, the AI for Drinking Water Chlorination Challenge, and the Pulmonary Fibrosis Segmentation Challenge. An AI Art Gallery will feature works that explore the balance between machine agency and vulnerability.
To support authors facing visa difficulties, a satellite event will be held in Guangzhou, China, from August 29 to August 31, 2025. The conference is supported by sponsors, including the Artificial Intelligence Journal (AIJ) and the Palais des Congrès de Montréal as Diamond Sponsor, GMI Cloud, FinVolution Group, and Baidu and Ant Research as Silver Sponsors.
